Paris/Berlin Summer 2010 |
The Keanes’ 2010 study abroad course revolves around the cities of Paris and Berlin, two dominating centers of influence for western civilization. Gothic cathedrals, majestic examples of King Louis XIV’s reign, buildings from the Napoleonic Empire, and many of the finest examples of the 20th century Modern Movement will be found with-in walking distance of your residences. Because the French have dominated Western Culture 4 times in modern history, Paris holds many of the world’s finest architectural examples representing perhaps single the greatest source of architectural influence between the Middle Ages and today. Prof. Mark Keane has taught overseas, 26 times overall, in most all of the major European capitals. Paris, Berlin, Rome, London and Barcelona are just to name a few, not to forget Athens, Venice, Budapest, Stockholm, and Vienna. After participating in a 9 month study abroad program in 1977 with the University of Illinois, Professor Keane found Paris to be the ideal open air university. The program affiliated with the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Versailles . Professor Keane taught in the very same program (1980-85) where he was a student just 2 years earlier. Both Professors are well versed in European culture and architecture. They revel in the opportunity to guide students through the fascinating streets of Europe’s top tier cities. By providing a rigorous pace of on-site learning, they have developed an intense experience of relating detailed observation to design. Their program is structured to develop critical thinking skills while sharpening the application of learned knowledge. The opportunity to unite this process while in a foreign setting significantly contributes to the richness of the experience. The Paris/Berlin program for 2010 is now set. Mark travels to Europe every three years so there still is another opportunity for you to go.
